Understanding BMI

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool that measures body fat based on height and weight. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and is widely used by healthcare providers.

The BMI formula is: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². For imperial units: BMI = (weight(lbs) / height(inches)²) × 703.

BMI Limitations

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so very muscular individuals may have high BMI without excess body fat. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or bone density.

For more accurate health assessment, consider additional measurements like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and overall fitness level.
